They were friends indeed. Two little boys who realized the value of what they shared. Keith was an aboriginal child with a sunny dispositon, dark exotic looks and a brilliant smile. Georgie was of Scottish extraction, fair and funny, and had definite leadership qualities. Bossy to some. but never to Keith. To Keith he was a buddy and a playmate.
They met when they started School together and knew immediately that the friendship was meant to be. From that very first day a bond was formed and they would brook no interference. They sat together in the classroom and were each others shadow when recess came. From the beginning they were different from the rest of the kids in the class and it was that difference that drew them together.
Although they were very popular with their teachers and classmates alike, they didn't join in many of the playground games, preferring instead to go off on their own and talk. Georgie was the talker and Keith was the listener. Georgie had a colorful way of describing everything he saw. The color yellow was the sun on your face. Blue was like birds singing.
Brown was a furry kitten and white was a blanket of snow in the winter. Keith never thought it strange when Georgie talked like this he understood perfectly and felt the colors too.
Keith would relate stories to Georgie of weekend outings with his dad when they went hiking in the hills. Explaining how his poor legs would ache from climbing but how he loved the "yellow" on his face when they reached the top and heard the "blue" singing.
He spoke about the day when he would have a fast and noisy car and he and Georgie would travel together. Georgie dreamt about being an airline pilot and travelling all over the world and giving Keith free rides.
At eight years old all things are possible.
You see, Keith was blind but he was Georgie's legs., and Georgie, confined to a wheelchair forever was the eyes that Keith would never see through.
